Meet Your Instructor: Phillip Clyde Bernier

Phillip Clyde Bernier - Hip Hop Freeze

“Hey there — I’m Phillip Clyde Bernier, and I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m the husband to my childhood sweetheart (yep — I circled her picture in my 3rd-grade yearbook) and the grateful dad of seven amazing kids, ages 1 to 14. My family is my heartbeat — and every part of Wilmington Hip Hop Dance is shaped by that love.

Before Wilmington became home, we spent years in Nashville, where I wrote and recorded cinematic pop dance music, toured the world, performed on national television, and even won ABC’s Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann — a reality show watched by over 10 million viewers a week. My music is still out there on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon if you’re curious. More new music is being released with every semester of Hip Hop classes.

But beyond the lights and tours, I’ve always been passionate about something deeper — helping people connect to their God-given joy, confidence, and purpose through movement and music. I’ve coached artists as a professional stage presence coach, led worship in churches for over 20 years, and worked with countless kids and families through choreography for local musicals here in Wilmington. Most recently, I played Bert in Mary Poppins at Thalian Hall — and yes, chimney sweeping is harder than it looks!

I started Wilmington Hip Hop Dance because I wanted to create a space where kids, teens, and adults could learn real hip hop choreography in a fun, safe, and encouraging environment. Every class is filled with clean, uplifting music, big smiles, and a whole lot of love. You don’t have to be perfect — just willing to show up.

Whether you’re registering your child for their first class or thinking about dancing again yourself, I want you to know:

You belong here.

I believe that when we dance, we reflect the joy and creativity of the One who made us.

Come join us. Let’s dance with joy and live with purpose — together.”
Phillip Clyde Bernier
